Earthday 2008 - Going Green Goes to the Dogs
At the Dog Dish, the idea of going green has gone, like all things, to the dogs. Here are some ways you can go green this Earth Day and every day!

The Scoop on Poop

  • Pick up after your pet. The accumulation of pet waste is not only a health hazard, but it has a real environmental impact, especially if storm drains carry it into waterways. Make sure that you pick up your pet’s waste in your yard and while on walks. This will also make you a little more popular with your neighbors.
  • Make sure that your method of disposal is biodegradable. If you purchase pet pickup bags please make sure they are bio-degradable. A recent study in San Francisco determined that pet waste makes up 3.8% of residential landfills. Much of this landfill problem is the result of pet waste that is disposed of in regular plastic bags. Using biodegradable bags allows the pet waste to go back to the earth as nature intended. Check out “Scoopies” available at the Dog Dish.
  • Recycle your pet waste. A Department of Agriculture study published in December 2005 recommended composting as an earth-friendly solution to the problem of dog waste.
Use your “green” to buy green
  • Use eco-friendly pet grooming products. Avoid products that contain phosphates, sulfates and other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Check out Earthbath, a line of people tested and pet approved totally natural pet care products available at the Dog Dish.
  • Purchase earth friendly pet toys and accessories. We carry collars, beds, treats, toys and other accessories that are made with earth friendly materials such as hemp, organic or recycled materials. Check out Earth Dog hemp collars, West Paw Design recycled beds and toys, Robbie Dawg Treats and Simply Fido organic cotton toys and tees.
  • When traveling with your pet, bring a reusable container for water. Stop by the Dog Dish and check out our Water Rover which not only allows you to reuse your water container, it allows you to tip extra water back into the container instead of tossing it out.
Recycle
  • Reuse shopping bags when making a purchase. This won't just help the environment but save you 10% on all purchases made during the month of April at the Dog Dish.
  • Adopt, don't buy, your next pet. It's the ultimate in recycling and will save the life of a homeless pet.
